OpenClaw with Muapi
Connect Muapi to OpenClaw as a custom OpenAI-compatible provider. OpenClaw can then use Muapi text models in its agents and connected channels.
1. Create a key and choose a model
Create an API key in the Muapi dashboard, then list the available text models:
curl -s "https://api.muapi.ai/v1/models?type=text" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $MUAPI_API_KEY"
Choose a model whose response includes capabilities.tools: true so OpenClaw can use its tools.
2. Configure the custom provider
Set MUAPI_API_KEY in the environment used to run the OpenClaw gateway. Add this provider and default model to your OpenClaw configuration, usually ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json:
{
models: {
mode: "merge",
providers: {
muapi: {
baseUrl: "https://api.muapi.ai/v1",
apiKey: "${MUAPI_API_KEY}",
api: "openai-completions",
models: [
{
id: "YOUR_MODEL_ID",
name: "Muapi text model",
},
],
},
},
},
agents: {
defaults: {
model: {
primary: "muapi/YOUR_MODEL_ID",
},
},
},
}
Replace YOUR_MODEL_ID in both places with the exact ID from Muapi's model list. Keep the key out of shared project files. If OpenClaw runs as a service, make sure the service environment contains MUAPI_API_KEY.
3. Start OpenClaw and verify the model
List configured models and start a chat:
openclaw models list
openclaw tui
Try a small request that uses a tool, such as asking the agent to summarize a file in its workspace. Connect messaging channels after the model works in the terminal UI.
Troubleshooting
- If the model does not appear, check the provider ID, exact model ID, and JSON5 syntax.
- If authentication fails, confirm the gateway process can read
MUAPI_API_KEY. - If the model answers without using tools, select a model with
capabilities.tools: true. - Start with a narrow task and check usage in the Muapi dashboard; long agent sessions can send substantial context.
See the OpenClaw custom provider documentation and model configuration guide for current configuration options.
